hey guys, im wonder how much you all know about rebuilding an Elka 3 way adjustable rear shock? i only need to replace the seals and fluid. How do i know how much oil and nitrogen i need?

You'll need the spec sheet for that shock to check the viscosity and mls of fluid, plus the nitrogen charge psi value as well. You cannot recharge it unless you have a low pressure (0 to 300psi range) regulator and charge fitting hose, plus the bottle of nitrogen to finish the work.

we have a fancy digital nitrogen system at work. i can set it from 1psi,or kpa-max bottle pressure. open the valve and it will equalize the pressure. elka will not give me the amounts i need. I emailed them and they gave me the name of a shop. I had the guy rebuild my fronts, but for the rear its just a simple remove and replace parts. the fronts were 100% rebuilt and revalved and resprung.

I'd say then that its best you send the shock to the shop they recommend unless you can check the viscosity and measure out all of the oil thats in it now to get that bit of info, but you still wont know the nitrogen pressure value and thats important too.
FWIW,I had my Ohlins damper on the 900RR start leaking at one of the ends and they would not sell me the parts to fix it, however they did offer a quick rebuild service so i had no choice. Sometimes its best to have them do it and get your item fixed with a factory rebuild.

suspension is a bit of dark arts so to speak usually left for pros. but i purchased the best book for suspension and being a mechanic i hate paying people to fix something i can do myself. i dont see why they wouldnt give me the fluid type/amount and nitrogen PSI. i can find out how much nitrogen is currently in it, but the oil cant be properly measured because the shock had a leak. if needed i will strip the shock and take the seals to a bearing shop and have them match them up. im going to send an email to the guy they said to contact and see if he will give me the info.
