T250 spark plugs and flooded carbs

Post by Ruton »

Does anyone know what to gap the plugs for a T250 at? Are NGK B7HS the correct plug for it? On a side note,I am having a hard time keeping the motorcycle running. The carbs have been cleaned, I was riding it just fine earlier today but when trying to start her up later it would just bog and die out after a few minutes. I had the petcock on "Res" while riding early in the day and when putting it away thinking it was "OFF" put it on "PR", which I now believe means Prime  . Would flooding the carbs cause these issues and how can I clear the excess fuel?

Step 1: wheel bike outside and far from the house and pointing towards the house with exhaust having a lot of space behind.

Step 2: Get a fully charge fire extinguisher and place it say 10' from bike.

Step 3: Remove plugs and kick the bike over a few times to clear gross amounts of fuel.

Step 4: start bike and hold the throttle wide open until it clears. In some cases excessive fuel may ignite in the pipe which will typically just blow out the back. In the extremely unlikely event that something actually catches fire, refer to step 2

Just as a reference I bump started on my race bikes a few years ago when it was flooded and there was raw fuel spraying out the end of the tail pipes but nothing ignited. A buddy tried to start a TZ on rollers with excess fuel and bent a rod which then broke half way round Mid Ohio in a race. Moral of the story, full throttle is fine because if it's flooded it won't rev high until it clears its throat.

I picked up some NGK B7HS and gapped them to .028 in case anyone else wanted to know. I pulled the old ones out, cranked it a few times and put in the new plugs. Then kicked it again a lot of times. It took quite a bit of sweat but I got it and with no fire. I actually saw you post a similar post on another thread and followed that, but thanks for this even more in depth one.

That's good news. The thing that messes with people's minds is the prospect of a wide open throttle.

The fact is that when the throttle is wide open and the motor is flooded, kicking it over draws only air in. The air velocity at low speed with a WOT is very low, so it picks up little to no fuel and the motor eventually fires on that air plus some of the surplus fuel vapors. It will usually fire up eventually and run reluctantly because of that surplus fuel - until the surplus is blown out or is burned and then the revs start to rise and at some point, it's obvious that the throttle can be shut somewhat.

If it's flooded, a small throttle opening or using choke pulls in even more fuel which makes things worse. So it's wide open throttle and kick or push like mad until it fire up and clears its lungs.

Why not do it the easy way & take out the crankcase drain plugs, kick the bike over & few times to get rid of any excess fuel, refit plugs job done with no risk of bending con rod's by hydraulic lock either?

If a bike has them that's a good way to go, but many don't have a way to drain the crankcases.

On the GT triples with SRIS, the SRIS valves can be removed to drain fuel or oil.

I kinda figured that  But the not many others do and people search for answers to problems that they have for other bikes too.

Thanks for the reminder about the T250 drain plugs.
