Anyway, considering these GT's of ours are the 'Grand tourers', who's done miles on theirs? They ride so smoothly and relatively comfortably that they beg to be taken out on the dusty trail, but who actually does it? The longest I've been on mine in one excursion is 3-4 hours (250 miles or so) on back roads and fun stuff.
As summer is drawing to a close, I'm considering heading out to destinations unknown but I'd love to hear some stories. Backpacks full of oil and spare spark plugs?
Yep, the GT550L!! Prepare? Checked the timing (still running points!) and tire pressure! Changed the trans oil and took 4 liters of injector oil with me (brought one back!)! My biggest problem was I holed a piston 2 weeks before I left! Changed pistons/rings and cylinders but didn't really have time to dial everything in! The Old Girl still ran fine, averaged 45 MPG (Imp) for the trip! Doing it again next year too! All except blowing a hole a piston!!
My best on the T500 was a 1400km (875 miles) trip. Do it each year to Phillip Island World SuperBikes Championship. I use the modern bike for anything further. I'm too old nowdays to suffer the vibrations from the T500 for anything further than that.
Hi,Sydney to Perth & back in 1976,on a GT750M never missed a beat in the middle of November (summer)The two other bikes on the trip (Suzuki GS750 & T500) both suffered power loss due to the heat of the day !! no such problems with "liquid cooled" My current GT750A has done Sydney to Brisbane twice,& other long runs without to many problems...the odd loose exhaust flange...but nothing major
Cheers,
Roger.
Toured northern Europe on my RE5M - took 4 spare plugs (unavailable in most countries), injection oil (2 bottles), spare head and tail bulbs, puncture kit, spare cables etc.
So it blew an indicator bulb.

I'm addicted to brake fluid, but I know I can stop anytime.
Toured western europe on my GT380B in 1981. 5000miles, not a hitch. Mate on his Honda 250 Superdream ditto until Munich, when it lost sparks completely. Choice to wait for a delivery of a part to local Honda or pillion home with me. Luckily for the poor 380, he waited and I left him!
