Timing

Post by BeansWelds »

So I set my timing at .083 btdc. As I am looking at my manual a 1974 380 L should have been .094. I have an electronic ignition from power dynamo. Do I need to change this ASAP? Will it be just fine if not better for the motor that it's not advanced as much? The later models ran at .080/.082

0.083" versus 0.094" I don't see a need to change ASAP per your question. The electronic ignition CDI? gives a faster spark time than points so 0.083" might be better. I also see Suz changes timing on some 2 stroke bikes from year to year with no clear reasoning I can see.

Try a little more advance if you like. I run my 74L to the 74 spec, but with stock ignition. I like to run my bikes to spec if not a degree more advanced to allow for some wear. I find a couple degrees retarded bike lacks mid-range power to pull up a grade for example without down shifting. If you run tach red lined most the time (racing?) a little retarded may save some heat/pumping losses.
