stress cracks

Post by smokie »

When I changed my timing gear last year I noticed some cracks in the clutch cover. These are not all the way through, just on the inside. Should I be worried? What are the chances of it falling apart?

I see those on a lot of bikes, and don't really know what they are.

I've always ignored them, and have never seen a clutch cover spontaneously break.

Good luck, Arne

I don't believe they are cracks at all. They occur very often in aluminum or AL alloy metal when they are cast in the mold. they are like wrinkles in the surface of the metal when the molten material was poured into the mold and just the top layer hardened up a little .

Nothing to worry about at all

No problem, I am very picky on my machines also. That's why I don't let anyone else touch them with a wrench.
