Mornin guys,

I am hoping that someone knows and can post the width for a '74 GT750 swing arm for me. I'm getting ready to build my bike in the next couple of months so I'm gathering all the parts, pieces and information ahead of time so I have a smooth build process. So, what's the width of the pivot point. What I would really love is if someone could post a picture with all the measurements shown since there are many more factors to consider than just the width of the pivot point but this is just a starting point.

Honda VFR ('90-'2003+), Hawk, RC30/45, NSR250 all use the same relative rear wheel offset. i.e. mix and match wheels amongst the various models and so long as the spindle face is unmolested the wheels will remain centered.

The rear axle on the VTR is 20mm dia. the CBR 954 is 25mm dia.
Both the VTR and 954 have 25mm of adjustment from wheel full forward to full back.
The pivot bolt diameter for the VTR and VFR is the same. The CBR is considerably larger.

If it helps, I just modded a TL1000r swingarm to fit my '73 GT750. I can't remember the pivot width off the top of my head right now but I had to remove 5mm +- to get it to fit. I can measure the gt swingarm tomorrow when I stop by my workshop after my 9-5.

I do not have welding capability at home so I'm going to be forced to maintain the twin-shock setup. I've often been tempted to buy one of those welders from harbor freight but a friend bought one for 100 bucks or so and it didn't work worth a darn. I tried to tell him that if it plugs into 110V, 20A circuit it's not going to work. Maybe one day I'll break down and buy a decent 220 or gas welder but for now anyway, I'm forced to find workarounds.

SD, I haven't worked out the complete build plan details yet so I'm not sure what length I'm going to be shooting for but I don't think I'm going to want it longer. I've read a couple of dozen build threads it seems in the past couple of weeks and I'm trying to avoid some of the pitfalls others have had to deal with. That's why I gathered so many different bikes' info. Maybe I'll find a solution that's a near slip-in?!! I figure the chances of finding something that works better than stock yet doesn't take a frame rebuild are pretty good considering the sheer number of different swingarms built in the past 15 years or so. Even motocross S/A's aren't out of the question since many 250cc and up are built massively stronger than the stock GT S/A was....at least it appears that way.

What i have seen so far swapping modern ends is the new GSXR front end will take off a couple of inches of the bikes length and then the swingarm adds a bit so most of the bikes come out a couple of inches longer than stock .

Agreed, and lower which isn't all that great considering that there are 3 big pipes to allow for. I did find these puppies....

which will allow me to take a boxed S/A and convert it to a shock-mount. I'm just trying to get all the options before I formulate my final plan. There sure is a ton of info out there to gather<LOL>!! It's easy, or easier to do a back-to-stock restore because there are no options, just get the right parts, restore the ones you can and go!

I come up with 226mm approximately on a 1975 chassis. I went with a 1978 GS1000 S/A. It is heavy but much stouter than the stock piece. The stock length is around 450mm and the GS 1000 is 535mm, of course depending on where the axle is adjusted to. Stock pivot shaft is 14mm, GS1000 is 16mm. I believe the larger pivot shaft and the heavier construction of the GS parts will take some of the Flexy out of the Flier. I just drilled and reamed my frame bosses for the larger pivot shaft and I have a decent rear disc set up from the GS donor. The sprocket alignment is perfect with the GS set up. The shock mounting on the GS S/A is a clevis style and to maintain the stock-ish ride height will require around a 13.5 - 345mm shock. The shocks lay down slightly for the cool look of early 70's motocross bikes. I like it cause it was cheap and easy. I don't have much cash so it works for me. Of course this is all mock up now. A couple more brackets and off to powder coat

That's a pretty decent solution PTW and kudo's to you for finding a low cost way to make it work while definitely improving the rear end. Weight and length are my two biggest enemies at this point in my process...of course that may change in the next month or two it takes me to formulate my final plan. I really appreciate the time it took for you to post up because it lets me see different solutions that I hadn't thought of. I think that's the upside of being able to reach out and ask so many people what they think.

Yes it is SD....and I've seen that bike before. A few of us from the Kaw triples board met up at Mid-Ohio last year and we saw this bike. It looks better in person and it is very well done.
