Tire/Rim sizes for a "modern retro"

Hi!
I'm looking at rebuilding my wheels, new tires, the whole thing.
What is the widest combination I can fit without extensive modification? Perhaps even going 17"
This is what I was going for. Though I know it won't be that wide.
