The way it was

I took lots of photos before I tore the bike down. This was how the points wire was routed. Something doesn't seem right to me. Is this right? Also there is a huge tie down on the case just north of the pump cover. There was nothing going through that when I got the bike. What's supposed to travel through that?

Points loom routing is correct. Odd that it runs like that but hey ho. I've had two 550s, one was dealer bone stock (horribly grubby when I got it though) and it was like that.

The bigger tie down is intended to hold the float bowl overflows (3) and vent tubes (2) from the inter-carb joints and direct any fuel down the hole at the rear of the case.

Cheers,
Mike

Seems like way overkill for tubes. I never use anything on the vent fittings. I just leave them open. Thanks!
