No more Guess Work

No more will I attempt to add fluids by weight. Just bought this set off eBay. They had cheaper sets, but most of them started at 50ml.. Unnerving is that all the beakers say approx. Even the Pyrex ones said +/- 5%. Just search eBay for 'glass beaker sets'.

My background means that I can get really anoraky about this (sorry in advance):
If you want maximum accuracy and don't want to weigh the oil - that's what the Formula 1 lot do - you need one of these:

Cheap isn't it? Accurate to
+0.2ml, but the oil must be at 20°C
I personally would go for this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/250ml-Glass-Mea ... 4d13537244" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Only accurate to
+1ml but that's less than 1% error so surely good enough

I figured they would be accurate enough. I'm not mixing nitro glycerin.

Aahh! Now, with nitrogylcerine it's not the quantities, but the temperature that's important.
Don't want to let it get too warm, for err.. obvious reasons

Anyway, I agree, more than accurate enough

I think you guys need to relax. That kind of accuracy is lost on these old bikes. Just my opinion.

As Alfred E Newman would say "What? Me worry?"
I was just trying to get away from using weight to add fluids. I went by weight to add 1500cc to the tranny, only to find out I was over full by nearly 3/4 cup. There was a small amount of residual left, but not nearly that much.

Another way to skin a cat (as they say) is to use a syringe. I have one that holds 50cc (or 50ml) and it is easy to precisely add your desired amount of oil. I would agree with rngdng that +- 20cc isn't going to make much difference on the crude damping inside the forks of these older bikes.
Cheers Geoff

On a street bike I use a simple cheap measuring jug. I think mine may have been a 2 stroke fuel oil mixing jug and it's accurate enough for forks.
For a race bike I use the same approach but add a little more and then adjust both legs to the same oil level with a Motion Pro oil level gauge. It's cheap and last until the syringe seal dries up.

But for the street, that measuring jug is close enough.

They were shipped yesterday - Priority 2nd day. I might get them tomorrow - Saturday more likely. My biggest fear is the graduations will sluff off once they get a good dose of oil. We have a high quality kitchen set of measuring cups. Graduations are nearly gone, but I think the dishwasher is responsible for that. My 'OTHER' reason for ordering this set is I think they're neat

Of course they really look neat in the ad because they all contain different colors of liquid

The beakers showed up. They are almost too nice to use for the intended purpose. Should be displayed somewhere, but I have no place. This is the smallest of the bunch. 5ml. That's either a tiny beaker or a very large quarter. You decide.

For fork oil level, no fancy tools required.......
Got an old squirt bottle????
Take the squirter off and cut the tube to the desired length.
Over fill the fork tube, insert cut tube/squirter and squirt the extra oil back into the bottle.
