Suzuki T500 Alpina

Post by titan performance »

I thought it was about time I sorted out a photo-bucket account, as I haven't posted a picture on the forum since the upload limit was reached....how ever long ago that was?
Here's some pictures of my T500M Alpina, so named because I rode over the Alps to Italy on it many years ago. It looked stock back then, as the customising work was only done last year.
I've owned this bike since I was 19, back in 1977, so I wanted to do it justice and create the bike I would have wished it was back then. It had to still be instantly recognisable as the T500M it started out as, which is why I wanted to keep the lovely stock tank, and the Maui blue paint. Aside from that, I wanted to change as much as possible.......[*] Image[*]

I've seen that bike before, and it is gorgeous!!! The Force is strong in that one......

Lane
If you stroke it more than twice; you're playing with it.

Too many bikes, too much time, ENOUGH SPACE, FINALLY! Never enough money.........

Thanks Lane. I must say that I was very pleased with the end result, and it probably exceeded my expectations. You know how it is...there's an idea in your head, but until it's actually together you can't visualise it 100%. A lot of people have seen it at shows and meets, and the Isle of Man TT twice now, and all feedback has been good. This was the first year I didn't take a modern bike to the TT, and I had so much fun on the old'uns, I probably wont take a modern bike again.
Here's the two I took this year.[*]Image[*]

This is the Kettle cafe at rest after a lap of the circuit early on mad Sunday ,morning this year. The pub is Creg ny Baa, one of the circuit's most recognised landmarks. It's just 2 or 3 miles from the end of the lap.[*]Image[*]

Thanks guys....I didn't really document the 750 build. as it was purchased incomplete, but the frame was powder coated and engine cleaned already. I decluttered it, found the big tank on ebay, and got the bodywork painted.
I do have a good few pics of the 500 build though, as this one really was a total strip down and start again. Did you want to see them?

OK...here goes. Work started early March 2014, with a completion dead-line of mid May, in time to go to the TT.
Once stripped down, the frame was totally delugged, and extra frame bracing was welded in as per the race bikes of old...not so much for strength, but more for cosmetic appearance. I was moving everything from the centre of the frame, and the extra tube gives a more balanced look in my opinion. A small cross member was also attached to mount the new oil tank.
Once the frame was prepared, it was off to be sand blasted, and powder coated in metallic grey.[*]Image[*]

The tank was also blasted in preparation for paint, which exposed a number of tiny pin holes. These were welded up before the tank was sealed and primed.[*]Image[*]

I designed a new top yoke which I had waterjet cut from 20mm aluminium plate. Unfortunately I made an error in assuming the geometry is the same as the GT500 yoke...it isn't, so the first one was wrong, doh ![*]Image[*][*]Image[*]

Next was the task of the keg style 2 stroke tank, which would hang from the newly welded frame cross member. Filling by a small side spout, with a beautiful little threaded knurled top.[*] Image[*][*]Image[*][*]Image[*]

I wanted flat bars on this bike, so I used a set of really nice risers that were on a wrecked Yam custom that we had in the work shop.[*]Image[*]

Polishing is a tiresome task, and as our local polisher also does plating....I sent all the not so shiny stuff to him. I take the precaution of picturing all the bits, just in case something goes missing.[*]Image[*][*]Image[*][*]Image[*]

In a quest to create a stripped down tidy looking custom, I wanted to move the battery and electrics into the seat void, which means making a tray up to suit.[*]Image[*]

The front edge of the glass seat unit was contoured to match the tank.[*]Image[*]

I matched a piece of ali plate to the seat and tank as well, to mount the seat cushion to.[*]Image[*]

Cleaning, polishing and refurbishing the switch blocks is very fiddly, but worth it.[*]Image[*][*]Image[*]

Back to the seat.....most of the loom was replaced, and some sections needed extending to get the reg/rec under the seat.[*]Image[*]

I made a simple tongue to bolt on the frame, and a catcher on the seat unit....this way there are no visible bolts at the front at least.[*]Image[*]

I shaped a strap for the mount at the rear of the seat, and used plenty of bond to secure it.[*]Image[*]

This is the plate that would carry the seat cushion. It's bolted to the seat unit using riv-nuts.[*]Image[*]

Naturally, a set of our own rearsets were fitted. Slightly changed on the gear side, as both pipes were to be on the right.[*]Image[*]

The front end starts to come together....a handy little tip....the tops of the legs are usually tatty from being under the ears for 40 years. I simply covered them with some polished stainless tube, and no-one would ever know. After market head lamp brackets were to carry an upgraded headlamp from a modern GS500.[*]Image[*]

In the meantime, the seat upholstery was done, and the paintwork completed. Suzuki Maui blue no longer available, but Daihatsu Peacock blue is a perfect match ![*]Image[*][*]Image[*]

The motor was good mechanically, but was wearing 37 years of grime and shite, so I sealed up the ports, and had it soda blasted in one lump.[*]Image[*][*]Image[*]

Back to the water jet cutters, after designing a clock mount, and a front fender stay. These would be bent and folded, then polished.[*]Image[*][*]Image[*][*]Image[*]

The 2 M6 holes in the new clock mount, are for a pair of LED's for the neutral and high beam indicators.[*]Image[*]

One of the best days of the build.....getting the body work back from my pal Pete.....lovely ![*]Image[*][*]Image[*]

I was starting to get pretty excited by this point.....the body work is on, I've just got to fine tune the mounting of the pipes, and get them polished.[*]Image[*]

Just look at the difference the polished pipes and a bit of sunshine make.[*]Image[*][*]Image[*][*]Image[*]
