GT 550?

I have this GT 550, which was registered in April 1977.It's frame number, (68005) and engine number, (71087) suggests it's a 1976 A model. But surely it should have the front mudguard with the front stay? Does anyone recognise the exhaust system?
I don't think it should have this instrument panel either.
And this is an interesting bodge, or perhaps bit of ingenuity? The other mirror has a matching screw!
This wiring is a bit rough and ready, but in fairness is over engineered rather than the other way round. Is that block connector that isn't connected what should go to the correct instrument panel?
This is the rotor and a pick up on the electronic ignition, but look at the size of the air gap. It works OK but it doesn't seem right. Any views on this?

You are correct. Per this link its a 1976 A model.

The instrument panel is for an early model year bike.
The original instrument panel had a gear position indicator.
The unused block connector looks like its for the gear indicator.

I can confirm that the connector is for the shift indicator. The single blue wire is the neutral light.
The exhaust appears to be an aftermarket set of expansion chambers.

Does the GT500 have an 8k redline?

GT500 Redline area is between 7000 - 9000, so it's a different face at least, but the actual instrument enclosure is same as GT500 as far as I can see.
Maybe someone's put GT550 instruments into a GT500 enclosure?

Instruments appear to be for a 77 gt250, 8 to 10k redline,glass lens,brown face,76-77 gt250 and 500 use the same instrument housing.

Pipes look like Allspeeds. The bike is a "bitsa". Nothing wrong with that if you want a rider. The mirrors are that way because the rubber damper material is missing. The screws are a novel approach to keeping the mirrors from flopping. At least that's how it looks. Ignition looks like Boyer-Bransden.

Lots of things non standard, but if it runs OK, then try not to mend it!
The clocks look like an early rev counter (but the high beam is the wrong colour) and late speedo as the early ones had increases in 20 mph increments. Or possibly from a different model as suggested (GT250/315?) There should be a gear indicator on the clocks.
Pipes could be Allspeeds/Gibsons or Microns. Higgspeeds are different down pipes with angles rather than a nice sweep. Wrong tank colour etc. But if you like it, then it's OK.
Have a look
