Fitting Exhaust?

My phone crashed along with ALL of the reference photos I took of the 1973 GT550 I am putting back together this winter.
Fitting the cleaned up 3-4-4 OEM exhaust.
A little stuck. Basically do you screw the exhaust collar out far enough to put a donut gasket in the exhaust port and then mount it flush in the front?
Or do you mount from the back and make sure that end lines up before tackling the front? Seems like you could screw the exhaust collar in in such a way that the exhaust pipe would mount solid to the exhaust port--no donut needed. Or is this bad?
Def have an alignment issue on the throttle side cylinder. Suggestions welcome.
Thanks
