What I meant was that the balls should be there. Never known any ever come out.
What model 550 is it? Are those separate or banked carbs?

Some of the holes are cross drillings from the manufacturing process and have balls pressed in to seal them after machining. Others are left open by design.

What we can't determine from the info provided so far is if your carbs have the correct holes plugged or unplugged or if some of the balls have been removed. Carbs on 72/73 bikes are separate and later carbs were joined at the top and are slightly different. I just checked my files and of all the pictures I took of a set of '72 GT550 carbs, unfortunately none show the balls in the intake side, so I can't tell you for sure which should be plugged.

Perhaps if you could take pictures of all 3 carb intakes, perhaps one of the GT550 gurus will chime in.
