GT185 Rear Wheel/Sprocket Assembly

I've owned this bike for over 4 years now, but just noticed this yesterday evening and I don't think it's correct. Had the bike on the center stand. When you rotate the rear wheel forward and backwards there is rotational play between the sprocket hub and the wheel hub's rubber shock absorber. Play is about .25". I do not believe this is correct and I need to replace that rubber shock absorber. Am I correct or is this play normal?

Where is that measure from: the outer diameter of the tire or the hub to wheel? If tire OK maybe. If at hub not sure. How many miles on bike? If the bike surges or bucks when cruising just at on and off throttle that may be the issue (or loose chain).

I think my GT185 was pretty sloppy there too and had +15K miles on bike, but not a problem as I recall and rubber was there. You should inspect the rubber to make sure no visible damage and replace as needed.

That .25" play/ lash is down at the hub. The bike has 8.5K and has been about 2 years since I had the rear wheel off to replace the tire and brake shoes. I'm going to take your advice and take the rear wheel off to inspect it. That slop just seems excessive.
