No Spark

Hi Guys

I seem to have lost the spark to all plugs on my GT 750J- i was cleaning up the points with the intention of strobing the timing - the bike was running before this. i am also suspicious that the battery was nit charging properly as i had to re-charge it off the bike despite it being on trickle charge when on the bike . i don’t think the two are related but they might be . Anyone got any ideas what’s gone wrong . I have since re-charged the battery and the starter motor turns over strongly but no spark at the plugs .

Hi
Have you cleaned the points in the old way with some kind of emery paper? Modern points have a plated surface which you clean with just a plain bit of white cardboard. Any abrasive material will stop the points working.

If you removed the points to clean them, you may have assembled the parts in the wrong order. See:

Looking at the web - they don’t come cheap - and there are some different makes out there - any recommendations and are the three sets all the same or do they have different part numbers ?

The price of 3 new OEM points & condensers is in the same ballpark as an electronic ignition.

Accent has the easiest to install electronic ignition. It was 155 Euro + shipping for the GT550 version.

Their website doesn’t provide much info. But they are easy to deal with via email & can converse in English.

Or is it time to bite the bullet and go for electronic ignition ?

This is the Accent ignition on my GT550. There is no external controller box. It has an LED that you use to set the timing. So its pretty easy to install.

Thanks everyone for the info - there’s a big difference in price for the contact points from Robinson’s and those from suzytwo.

I’ve emailed Accent and await there reply . Has anyone fitted a system from Newtronic ?

How do you know if you have these 'modern' points? I've never heard of this plating before, although admittedly I haven't had my GT that long..
Points mostly went away by early 80s so did they start to make replacements to OE with this surface?

My two GT750s have Newtronic ignition. A good option. They have a small controller box that you have to mount.

Years ago there some some online negative comments about them. But the products were improved after Autocar aqcuired the company.

Modern points have a tungsten plate. If cleaned with emery paper the tiny particles left on the surface burn and damage the surface. Also when you remove the tungsten down to steel that will rust causing no contact. :D

Daichi-branded pattern points are fine, I used them on my 380. Much cheaper than OEM.
