smoking badly

Post by kiwi »

hi guys, bought a 1972 gt750,runs ok but smokes badly, when you give it a handfull i wouldnt want to be behind me,even cruising on the open road its quite noticable, ive checked oil pump settings, new air cleaner,,havnt looked at check valves yet,how do you get them out of a 72 as not screwed in,anything else that might cause the exessive smoke
thanks,dennis

Could be leaky check valves on your oil lines or at worst your burning trans oil..Is your trans fluid going down?

I had a GT550 last year which did this....months later I finally sussed that the PO had for their own reasons taken the pump arm off, turned it over 180 degrees and remounted it. So now it delivered max at idle, and less at WOT. Boy did that smoke until I sorted it out.

Sometimes after one of these bikes has been sitting for a while injector oil will accumulate at the bottom of the crank case so you will need to remove the SRIS valves to clear or some hard runs on the bike to get it all worked out .. the latter is very smokey to do .
the older i get the faster i was

Have you looked into the check valves yet? A more mechanically minded mate has just replaced the check valves/oil lines on my J as she was smoking quite a bit. The symptoms were a lot of smoke on start up and for the first 10ks, after which it would settle - until I gave her a handful. Interestingly, I have had the same problem on my H1 and am just replacing the ball bearings and springs in the check valves on her.

Where are you based?

Nothing spectacular Ian. Took some better lines off another J and cleaned them up before putting them onto my bike.
