Were they originally a light gray or a silver chrome paint ?

A fine grain metallic silver with a semi flat surface treatment. It must have been some thin form of clear coat added into the paint as it scratches off quite easily. You cant simply spray on metallic paint as a base and leave it as it has no durability against chemicals or the elements so they had to add something and I believe thats what it was originally

Check. I sprayed it a metallic silver, was debating adding clear. 3 coats of clear will tone it done quite a bit. Infact, it will turn it gray to a dull silver. That's what I'll do. Cheers.
