castic rust removal

As I am starting to get to the end of my items requiring major rust removal i thought i would share my experiences with using a caustic electrolytic rust removal bath
I used 5 gallons of warm water with 2 kg washing soda and some caustic soda and some silica
Wired up a big battery charger and away I went, a metal plate on the postive and the item to be cleaned on the negative 12 volt supply and switch on
It all started to fiz after a few hours i went back and all the major rust had gone leaving a black deposit on the metal which just bushed off, you can leave items in there for days if you want it will only take off the rust
This works wonders ... i highly recommend this to anyone needing to derust!
Keep the electrodes clean - if you have alot of rust either have lots of electrode surface area or clean off the rust off of your 12 volt negative electrode every hour or so.
I did my stands, battery box, yokes, brackets, carb parts, etc, DO not use on Alloy parts, ideal for cleaning before nickel plating
