I would like to put a T500 engine in this with upswept silencers etc.
I think it would cost me about £2,000 to do.
you can buy these GS500 with a knackered engine for around £400.

Excellent idea. The GS is not the fastest bike on the planet but should handle much better than any stock GT. It's a good cheap way to upgrade a GT.

Dave published a couple of pictures among the custom 500s I think.

Find someone who has one and offer to trade welding work or some racks for the old wreck. It's a win-win.

My first Bike

My first bike was a GS500E. 1991 model, IIRC. There is nothing all that special about them. In the US they are basically a starter bike. I liked that it was a little more upright than the CBR/GSXR/ZX crotch-rockets. I kept it for maybe a year or two, then sold it to buy a truck. Then the truck deal fell through and I was left wishing I still had my GS.

IMHO, you'd be better off starting with a GSX/R than a GS. The GSXR had better forks, rear suspension, brakes, etc.

discuss it with my wife.
I think its best just to forget the whole idea altogether.
it'll cost more than its worth and yes there better bikes out there
for the same money.
besides I've been riding 4 stroke for over 20 years now.
I have a good T500 and its not as good as I thought it was once.
things have moved on since .
yes they were good bikes in their day but thats it.
and I'm happy with my little bike ER650R to you guys in the USA.
I've only done a 1000 miles since I bought her last may(new).
so I think she last me a good few years yet.
this my baby on an earlier ride out when the weather was good. john

you will definately have to modify the front of the frame at the down tubes.I was going to try popping one in a GS500 frame but you know how everything else in life takes over.
