GT 750 motor in a 86 GSXR 750 frame

GT 750 motor in a 86 GSXR 750 frame
Hi all:
I am new here and I have been reading through the posts, in hopes to find a few answers. But haven't had much luck.
What work has to be done to shoe horn the gt 750 engine into a '86 GSXR frame ?. I have a line on a rolling frame for cheap, and i was thinking this would make a good winter project (heated garage). I have access to welding and metal working equipment, and not afraid to fabricate as necessary. Suzukidave appears to have done it with a 99 frame, but the '86 and '99 are different beasts. What is the general consensus, is it worth the effort or should i look around for a newer frame to work with.

An 86 GSXR chassis is a light year away from a 72 design GT chassis so if you feel so inclined, go for it.
Is it worth the effort? Only you can answer that one. later frames can handle far more HP that any GT motor will generate, but so would an 86. We need more specials around here, but I wouldn't cannibalize a street GT in great condition to do it.

The bike I propose to use is complete but hardly a pristine. I rebuilt the engine and carbs, but the remainder is still very much a jewel in the rough. Still tossing back and forth on a resto or a custom. The custom route in this case would appear to be the least expensive of the two.
I am going to look at the frame, wheels brakes etc tomorrow, and will let you guys know what i decide after that. If I do go the custom route (the way Im leaning) I will post lots of pictures and hopefully pick the brains of the wise on this site.

Iceman , what i found with the 99 GSXR frame is the Gxer engines are not as long as the GT engines so this will create a problem with the cradle being 4" too short but with the right aluminum welding skills i am sure this could be over come . Also the GT engine is not as tall as the GSXR engine so the GT engine will sit low in the frame.

I have both an 86 and a 05 GSXR. The 86 handles like a dumptruck.
I love it for a lot of different reasons and always ride it more than my 05, but dumptruck is pretty accurate.
If you like the look of a slabside GSXR and intend to build a bike that looks like something Suzuki coulda, go for it. Otherwise you can get an early 2000s chassis for close to the same money.
Use the radiator from the newer bike and save yourself that mounting hassle.

Thats a nice thought but the GSXR radiator will not mount up in the stock spot as the GT engine is 4" longer .iagsxr wrote:I

Ok so here the latest:
I got there to take a look, the frame etc. are a 1989 Katana. Most everything was there, so i scooped it up. The Katana has a steel frame, which in my case makes things easier to modify.
I took some of the parts and will pick up the rest on Monday or Tuesday. Then measuring and mock up begin. I have an extra set of cases for the GT which should help things along.

Thats cool as i also picked up a 96 Katana 600 with a locked up engine viewtopic.php?f=21&t=1972" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and did some measurements and found the frame to be a bit wider than even the 99 GSXR frame across the head so the GT engine should fit in but again the GT engine is about 4" longer than the Katana engine so a custom cradle will have to be made and as with my GT/GSXR project the pipes with have to be custom made to fit in real tight to the engine so the front wheel doesnt hit them under hard braking .

Yes i noticed the 600 thread. Looking forward the starting on the project. I saw your photos of the pipes in real close, my neighbour works in a stainless steel fabrication shop, builds tankers and such, he should be able to help me out with the pipes.

Sorry been a bit, yes I will get some photos up this week. The engine is in position, and being held with straps at the front of the engine and a mount at the rear. I got the J & R chambers that were posted on this site, so hopefully they will be arriving shortly. (Canadian Duty may hold them up for a bit, I hope not)
But i will definitely get some shot up by the weekend.

I created a cardboard version of the Chamber with the Software which fits the bike. I still might make a set if i know they will work ok.

Ah. Now I know where those chambers disappeared to. I was hoping to get them for a back to back dyno test but they suddenly were "withdrawn" . That's life. Saved me some cash I don't have anyway.
Those pipes were supposedly to match the porting in that article. I have not bothered to analyze them yet.

Yeah, I contacted the guy because it mentioned a but now price in the write up. Ebay screwed up and didn't put it in. So ended up with the pipes for 300.
