What are compatible fuel tanks for GT500 frame?

Post by Nicholas »

Hi all, I want to change the look of my bike from this Barry Sheene café racer to something a bit more city rider oriented. Probably a flat tracker style or possibly bobber, so wondered if anyone knew of some motorcycle models that fit my bike.

I am looking at the Honda CB750 style tank and also considering the GT550 or GS850 tanks.

Anyone got some advice or gotchas to think about? Recommendations also welcomed, looking for used tanks as I dont have the money to spend on a custom and I also like reusing things.

Many thanks in advance!

P.S. I will be selling my tank and seat. All fiberglass and from the 70s nice finish. Would consider sending it overseas.

Hi Paul, I might hold off and get the bike back on the road before I make any further changes. I have almost completed the engine rebuild, everything has been done, bar original pistons. So I am keen to ride it before I change it further, I am in love with my engine! :-)

I might be intetrested in some of your parts if I do make the change, your oil tank looks nice, are the mount points fixed? I'd be looking at mounting it vertically..

Your engine is certainly looking pretty...in fact I really like the look of the whole bike, I can't imagine why you feel the need to change it too much.

Our oil tank brackets are fixed, but we regularly cut them off and weld back elsewhere, and repolish.

Thanks Paul, I have put a lot of hard work into learning about engines and such....been great talking to people and finding resources about how the engines work. The head has been aqua blasted, strange grey colour, the barrels have been coated in a thermal dispersant (think I fell for a con :-) and the rest I have polished by hand.

I have matched the air-intake ports and polished them up... I cannot wait to have it all back on the road and take it for a ride. My friend has a stock GT500 too, so it will be interesting to see how the complete build with new parts will feel, I am putting all new parts in the crabs so it will be near to perfect! :-)

About the tank and seat... I really wanted a two stroke donor to create a flat-tracker for long tours...

But when I saw this original 70s cafe racer, I thought I'd save myself the trouble and ride it.... But then discovered the engine was in very poor shape and the pipes were even worse. So I decided to rebuild, it’s been a rewarding learning process for me, life changing, I love motorcycles and I only just discovered them a year ago with a two stroke Vespa T5. :-)

I will ride it when it’s together and then consider....I’m young and dumb mate. :-)
