oil tank.

Hi Guys,
has anyone sucessfully repaired a crack in the 2 stroke oil tank?
Cleaned mine up and after refilling it discovered that there is a hair line crack in it.

It has always dripped oil but I presumed it was from the union of the small pipe that joins the tank - so put off investigating it until now. I have sucessfully "Welded" plastic with a soldering iron before - but if anyone has a better fix it would be good.
I will take it off and clean it out with detergent in the sink (when my wife is out) and await any suggestions. There are some for sale on Ebay, but I could just end up with another cracked one.....

Thanks as ever

Steve

Hi out there,
I took the tank off, washed it out to remove any oil residue, and dried it. Tried the normal "welding " with a soldering iron but the plastic was not suitable, as it did not melt together as expected. Cleaned it off and excavated the crack slightly (not all the way through) and repaired it with a PTEX candle, which is used to repair the base of damaged Skis.

It is not as hard as the plastic the tank is made from but it melted into the crack and I built it up slightly over the crack too. I tested it with water and it is sealed - however two stroke oil may attack it, I will remount it and fill it up and see what happens - will post the result when I am sure.

Regards

Steve

Nice to hear it’s sealed OK.

If you think the 2t might affect the joint, is it worth trying to further protect the repair by skimming over the top of it with an epoxy or silicon type sealant?

Anyway, just a thought.
