Suzuki 2 Strokes

Hi All
I am really struggling to get into third gear and above. From first to second easy. Then from second to third the only way i can do it is to push down ever so slightly on the gear lever THEN lift it up.

Any advice on how to make the gears smoother much apprecviated. I have 90 gear oil in the box, if that is at all important. For years earlier it worked fine with this oil. These days its as though there is some play in the entire mechanism

Sounds like a weak or broken return spring. That's the hairpin spring on the shift shaft hiding behind the clutch.

can you access it by simply taking the clutch cover off? Or it is more complicated? Can the entire clutch itself stay on while you change it or install it?

I was going to say that teh clutch has to come off, but working with a mate's 550 last year we removed the shaft without taking out the clutch.

Before you start that, try to move the shift lever up and then down with the bike just sitting not running. If it's the spring, you should feel resistance (spring pressure) one direction and probably not in the other. If the lever has good spring resistance in both directions but is hard to move, it may be a bent shaft or something else.

Here is something for you to try. Drain the gearbox oil then refill it to the exact amount using a measuring jug. An overfilled gearbox will display symptoms like yours.

in fact if didnt resolve the problem There is no springy tension in the selector up or down

For me it sounds also like the return spring. May it is not mounted correctly. Force apart the hairpin spring before mounting (not only put over the pin as it is).

My mate had forgotten to fit the hairpin spring.

Roland is correct about fitting it, the legs must be opened up to fit around the peg.

Just Ram it and jam it into gear......
