trashed carb?

I sure hope not...

So I pulled the carbs off for the first time since I've gotten the GT500 and noticed that the vertical tube (not sure of the proper name) that runs from the carb body downward into a pocket in the bowl was broken between a couple of the holes at the top of the tube and repositioned to fit/function. This carb isn't off the cylinder thats given me problems before, so I know it was working properly. Here's some pics - its a tough spot to get a picture of, but the break goes between the holes at the top of the tubing.

I've gone through all the references for the Mikuni that I have and haven't been able to figure out this tube's use and figured I'd post it up here; plenty of you seem to know the inner workings much more than my 'clean this, turn that' understanding. Figure that if the carb needs to be replaced now is the time.

You can either solder the hole up or dab some JBWeld on it. Either will work.

the tube needs to be sealed to draw gas up to the choke. it should only give you a hard cold start unless you ran the choke on while running, then it might cause a lean condition on that cyl. can anyone else confirm or deny this?

Correct. It draws fuel up for the choke circuit.

So said repair failed miserably and I had to order a replacement carb which I was obviously not too happy about. After talking with the local Suzuki dealer I picked up the Mikuni model VM32-33 which seemed to be the correct one. Picked it up today and of course the intake bell OD is wider (58mm vs. 55mm) and the spigot OD is smaller (40mm vs 43mm). also no vacuum line, as thats been filled up.

did I order the wrong model or am I just going to have to change the carb/engine intake boot, air intake boot, and petcock if I want to get this thing running? they searched their system for the VM32SC that I have listed as the correct carb but nothing came up.

Try your local model store or hardware store for some thin wall brass tube and solder it over the crack.

problem is that the tube was holding on by a lot less that I thought and the whole thing came off. I suppose I could solder a sleeve on like you've mentioned but wouldn't that block the breather holes that are in the line to begin with?

If the tube broke off I would try and drill out the tube and replace with another used one or find a new piece cut to the proper length and glue it in place.

Also you might be able to shorten this some and reuse, if you use prime to fill your bowls first, your tube just needs to be in the gas.
