Buffalo Regulator/rectifier

Has anyone ever tried to replace the separate regulator and rectifier on their GT750 with a more modern solid-state combination reg/rect? It seems like since a modern version would "rectify" any problems having separate components and associated wiring would have on the charging system. The reason I ask is I have a perfectly good reg/rec from my TDM850 laying here, and it seems soooooooo simple...

Any thoughts?

As long as the unit you have came from a bike that has a charged field alternator, it'll work. In other words, if your unit came from a bike with a permanent magnet alternator, it won't work.

Lane-

What is the determining factor on which is which? There have to be some obvious differences that a layperson (such as myself) could easily identify. All it says about the charging system in my TDM manual is "AC magneto generator". My Clymer GT manual says something along the same lines, but it can't be that easy.

While I'm on the subject of electronics, has anyone attempted to adapt an electronic ignition system off of a four-stroke triple that produces a "waste spark" at the end of the exhaust cycle (i.e., Yamaha XS 750/850)? That too seems like it would be a pretty easy swap, and those bikes are junkyard-plentiful. Get the crank trigger, pick-up plate and CDI and adapt - what could be simpler?!? The timing for the waste spark should be same as the primary spark which would be ideal for a two-stroke...
