GT750 - water dripping from right side header

Now I know it is time to pull the motor. Took the bike for a ride in short pants which I seldom ever do. Thought I was picking up little rocks from the road but when I got to the Service Station I noticed it was not rocks but hot oily water. It was coming from the right exhaust header which is a little loose since I have not replaced one of the bolts which is stripped. I think its time to stop riding and start fixing this thing. //Pat

p.s. I plan on buying the DVD on engine tear down but I expect I will have a lot of questions over the next few months.

My guess would be a leak in the head gasket , this possibly could be fixed by retorqueing the head bolts but do it in the pattern laid out in the manual http://www.oldjapanesebikes.com/mraxl_G ... /sr20.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hi,yes it's time to fix the exhaust leak !! I think you'll find that the thread in the block is stripped,far more likely than the actual bolt being stripped ! It's a common problem with these old bikes,over time hot & cold & loosening & tightening will eventually strip the thread,the fix is to hellicoil the mounting hole,you will have to make up a jig to get everything going straight with the drill & tap,I've done two on my GT750...lower bolt holes on the left & right cylinders,this required the removal of the radiator crash bar, a hellicoil repair to the centre cylinder may require the engine to be out of the frame,or at the very least the removal of the radiator ? I hope you get "lucky" & it's only the mounting bolt that's lost it's thread.Please note that these pipes will leak if the exhaust flange is flush or to close to the block when tightened,always leaving around a 2ml gap between the exhaust flange & engine block to keep good pressure on the internal exhaust port gasket ring !,this is achieved by turning the flange on pipes threads,sometimes the flange can be seized on the threads & won't turn freely...a little WD40 or similar lubricant should free them after a hit with a rawhide/plastic hammer to get them moving ! Nickel anti-seize on bolts & exhaust flange threads highly recommend.

I have found several times that the stock bolts holding on the header were not long enough to use the entire depth of the threaded hole . I lucked out testing the depth of the hole and used a bolt that extended the whole way and there was enough threads to hold , still not the best fix as a helicoil would be but this could stop your leak for the time being .. easy enough to try anyways
