GT550 exhaust fitting from year to year

Post by 2strokelove »

Ok guys here's the question. I have a 1972 GT550. I'm working on the stock exhaust. The main pipes are ok, the center or bottom pipes are junk!! I have the opportunity to pick up a set of pipes. Will any year exhaust fit on a 72? mine does not have the spring hooks that are located at the cross over tubes. The set I'm looking at does. I also see that the 72 frame mount where the pipes would hang looks really different than later years. So what's everyone's take on this. I'm sure there's an easy answer. Thanks.

Beginning in 1974, the exhausts were revamped for greater ground clearance. 72 and 73 are the same. 74 thru 77 are the same. They mount to the frame differently. ANY year can be made to work on any bike, but you will have to fabricate a special tab to hang them from the frame. The mount locations differ by approx 1 1/2".
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.
