73 GT750 - Cafe RaCer in the making...

Post by n03l »

Hi everyone recently added a Gt750 to my motorcycle collection! Haven't even rode it yet (because winter is long and painful in Alberta, Canada) Anyways, I'm doing it up cafe racer style. I've already installed clip ons and begun getting the frame ready for the tail section I bought. I'm having issues mounting my stock MBC, wondering if anyone has any tips on a low profile one? Also if anyone has any suggestions on how to go about adding backing underneath the fiber glass tail (it's hollow now and would definitely crack and fall apart if not braced with something). I'll be adding lots of pictures! Thanks!

Nice start. Bassani or J&R pipes (?) and Spitfire tires. 73 with later style radiator cover ?

For the seat hump, I'd add a couple of simple strips to the rear frame rails going straight up inside the tail and bolt it trough the side of the hump.

Funny thing is that the bars look like they are upside down or possibly on the wrong sides. They should angle down 7 to 10 degrees and the bar should be ahead of the forks. They look like they are pointing upwards. may be a parallax effect I guess.

Yeah, I thought the way the bars are sitting didn't look quite right either... I have them mounted the only way that they wouldn't hit the fuel tank when cranked fully in either direction. I'll maybe try and mess around with them some more but I think no matter how I put them I won't be able to make the stock master brake cylinder work. As for the pipes, they came with the bike when I bought it so I'm unsure of who made them. But they sure sound awesome!

Those bars are definitely on backwards and pointing them forward like that will kill your wrists.

Flip 'em over. You'll gain clearance as the bars will be further from the tank.

Flipped the bars... feels and looks a lot better. Still not quite enough clearance though for the Master Brake Cylinder. I think need to find one with a front outlet. Looking at this oneImage

It might be time to modify the lock stops. Clip ons usually hit the tank or crush fingers, so it is usually necessary to reduce lock by adding weld or bolts to stop the forks from rotating as far

Found out I mounted the clip ons wrong. Suppose to be below the top triple tree clamp which means I need different head light ears. Also going to try spray foam to fill the emptiness under the tail section. What a learning process!

They don't have to be under the tree, if you've got enough fork above the top triple there's no reason you can't leave the bars there.

I was wondering what was wrong with the forks, all the travel is used up with the clip-ons, fender may smack triple clamp like that.

You are right, the forks are too compressed like that. Get some aftermarket headlamp ears and slide the clipons under the top triple clamp.

I wouldn't foam that seat. They are designed to work that way but you could stiffen it up by adding a bracket at the rear.

I've ordered some different head lamp ears and am going to try and mount the seat with some aluminum rails for backing.

Nice. Makes me dream of getting a 750 one day. I bet that thing has some 'gitup' as they say down here in these parts...

Update with new pics and video! clip-ons mounted correctly now, really pleased that the stock master cylinder fits too! Grinded off mounts for the old seat which now allows the tail section to sit flush on the frame. Next will be to secure the tail. I'll keep the pics coming!
