I suggest you keep your eyes peeled on ebay. That's where I got mine. The entire assembly including disks and plates. Found it on a BIN for $35.00. When I got it I almost fell over when it arrived. This had to have come off a very low mileage bike. It was just like brand new! It all now resides in RedZone.
The problem is these improved starter clutches are only found in the 76 &77's. I think they actually changed in late 75, but I don't know from what engine number. My 75 was built in 8/74 and it had the magical exploding starter clutch. It had already detonated when I bought the bike. I bought all new parts (rollers, springs and followers) and rebuilt the assembly. I was going to use it but that's when I ran across the later style on ebay. I sold the one I rebuilt to someone in France.
Good Luck! If it comes down to rebuilding your old one, I have several usable parts at your disposal.
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.

Suzuki Service Bulletin GT-26 addresses changing the GT550 starter clutch to the new style. Shows a parts diagram and part numbers. I think I found it on the ozebook website.

I recently ran into the same issue. I found it easier to source the new style, rather than finding good useable parts for the old style. If you do rebuild your old style, I believe the rollers, plungers, and springs are the same ones used on the GT750, which are still available from Suzuki (none of the other parts are available from my research). If you look up a starter clutch for a GT550 with the current fiche diagrams, the new style is all they will show you.

If you go with the newer style, you'll basically need a complete clutch assembly with the starter gear.

Just came across this on ebay. Complete NOS clutch and starter clutch assembly. A bit pricey, but its everything you'd need for the swap.

Problem solved. Got the NOS clutch on eBay.

Ouch... Pricey but at least there were no competing bidders to drive the price up even further.

Hi jabcb,
Glad to hear the ebay setup worked out for you. Also, wanted to let you know, I received the gt750 headlight. Exactly what I was needing, thanks again. I'll post pics of the bike when its done.
