BS40 Carb Float Bowl Markings
Of the six float bowls in my possession, there are different letters stamped into the base. I have I, J, K & L per the pic. As far as I know all the float bowls are exactly the same, so does anyone know what these letters mean?

Re: BS40 Carb Float Bowl Markings
Roy I believe the marks were done at QC stations in the factory. These bowls have some orifices to be tapped, drilled and checked and one jet for the pilot circuit also has to be pressed in.
I'd guess they used a letter to code the stations were the bowls were worked on as a reference in case any QC issues showed up later on.
Its possibly also a coincidence that most of the letters used, matched year models as well.
The fork lower leg caps also use something similar but have casting letters instead of stampings, most have an A or a C if you care to look between the nuts

Two strokes, its just that simple.

Re: BS40 Carb Float Bowl Markings
A while back I got hired to convert a bunch of carts to race in a "factory class"
I got a batch of mikuni carbs to use and they also got numbers on the bowls.
but they where to indicate the used main jet so I only needed to swith carbs to tune the mixture.
Allan: didn't know workers needed to sign off their word back in the days.

Re: BS40 Carb Float Bowl Markings
Japanese companies have been using all sorts of check marks for years to ensure that prior steps during the assembly process have been completed.
Stamped numbers or letters, paint marks, tags etc have all been used as a reference.
If you ever took apart a transistor radio back in the day 60-70s, it was common to find paint marks on the screw heads holding the circuit boards into the body as well as other areas.
