Wanted GT500 Parts. CDI Box and Ignition Coil

Post by Old School »

I just picked up a 76 GT500, and it has no spark. The Ig coil clearly has a crack around it and does not check correct with meter. I tried using a new Honda cb750 coil for testing and still no spark.

I am looking for a CDI and IG coil.

If anyone know what parts might interchange from other bikes that would be a great help.

In the US, the coil & CDI were unique to the GT500.
Both are available from Suzuki but are shockingly expensive.

Classic Suzuki in the Netherlands has new aftermarket parts that are much more reasonably priced.
Have not used these parts, but the company does have a very good reputation.

An eBay seller has a cheaper CDI.
Don't know anything about them so I can not attest to the product quality.

When looking for alternative coils, you need to look for a coil that's for CDI ignition, and has the correct primary & secondary resistances. Getting the same mounting dimension will make it easier to install.

Thank you.

Update. I tried the Honda coil a second time (with better connections) and I now have spark. I have since mounted it and rode the bike around a couple times. It appears that the early CB750 ignition coil will work with this system (it specs the same).

I am still looking for a GT500 seat, good or bad.

Interesting.

Did you use the stock coil mounts?

The mount spacing is longer on the Honda coil. I bolted the rear one on as normal, and with the front one being longer, it just catches the outer edge of the mount where I used a larger "fender" washer to hold it to the mounting plate.
