My ground strap is a tattered frayed mess. I'd like to replace it with something more presentable. I figure some 10 gauge wire should do nicely, but that poses 2 problems for me. The first problem is I don't have any crimping tools for wire that large. The second problem is finding eyelets for that large of wire that have small holes. The bolts at the motor and the battery are just 6mm, so 1/4" eyelets would work fine.
So I am looking for someone that has the right stuff to work with, can get the eyelets and make that wire. It needs to be 16-18" eye to eye. Black preferred. The OEM braided ground strap has been obsolete for decades.

Re: GT550 Ground Strap Replacement
I made up my last ground strap with supplies from the auto supply/repair store. I used a cable that's about the size of starter cable.

Chris I may have some 10G black and gold plated eyelets for 6mm size, how long does it have to be.
Two strokes, its just that simple.

Re: GT550 Ground Strap Replacement
I soaked the strap in Phosphoric Plus (available at Home Depot) overnight. It came out looking pretty good. The brass eyelets look brand new. There were a couple of areas where the strap was fraying. I covered those areas with heat shrink tubing. That pulled the fray together and will keep it from fraying more. I guess I'll use it
I tried to find some real flexible 10 ga (silicone jacket - multi stranded) wire. Not to be found in this town. It's available on eBay, but I don't need 50 feet. There are hundreds of ground straps on Amazon at reasonable prices. Problem is though, they are all for a car style battery. Large posts.
I found a brand new ground strap with 1/4" eyelets. Problem here is it doesn't tell me how long it is. All it tells me is it fits 1902 - 1956 Harley Davidson.

Re: GT550 Ground Strap Replacement
I know a Napa store near me that will install any preferred eyelets on a batter cable of any gauge or length that you would like as Richard suggested. That or invest in a heavy gauge crimper yourself. It's cheaper to have Napa install it on a new cable of your choice. They have most gauge wiring available to be cut to any length. If you ask them, some stores keep that stuff out of sight. I think you're braided one looks to be in pretty damn good condition.
