Re: Suzuki gt collection for sale in vermont!
First off -- I *HATE* when people make video in portrait orientation. Turn your damn phone!
Yeah, it is something that dreams are made off. For folks on this forum, a barn full of Suzuki 2-strokes is something that few (if any) of us will ever stumble upon.
Fiscally, it also is a dream. Nightmares are dreams, too.
Most all of those bikes look pretty ragged. A lifetime of work to get them back to their former glory. Where do you keep them, while they wait their turn? How many are too far gone to restore? Do any of them have paperwork? If not, another expense for getting them on the road, either in the US/CAN or overseas.
The guy who posted the video is associated with the History Channel, so I wouldn't be surprised that the price tag is on the high side. No one will walk in, and take anything on the cheap. If the stuff is still available this summer, I may take a ride up there on my bike. I believe it is about 200 miles from me, and I head into northern VT 1-2x each summer. Looks as it is a bit north of where I bought a T500 motor awhile back. Promised the seller I'd stop in with the restored bike someday. Maybe I can get on TV.
If the bikes were in better shape, one might be able to turn some of them around for a profit. If you were to just buy it for a specialized breaker operation, you may get some of your money back.
As the question goes -- How do you make a small fortune on vintage motorcycle restoration? Start with a large fortune.

Nooooooooooooooooooooo.
I can imagine nothing worse than a shed full of someone else's projects to work on. I can't finish my own plus the ones I took over from other people.
I must be getting old.

Re: Suzuki gt collection for sale in vermont!
Wow. Regardless of condition. That is one hell of a collection. I however agree. Too many of those bikes are simply junk. I see someone wanting to make an investment on restoring or reselling several parts from each bike as an investment opportunity. But, that price will be no where near what the guy sounds like to be expecting. I'd say 10-20 grand at the most. He'll get a lot of offers. I expect some coming out of Ohio.

Re: Suzuki gt collection for sale in vermont!

nice to see old two strokes being used as intended & not falling to bits in a big shed. These bikes have a limited life span, just like everything else on the planet,I'm just the current "caretaker" of my GT750 & can see a time returning when these old Japanese bikes will be of no interest to future generations, the current interest in old Japanese bikes is great too see & I hope it continues...I love riding & maintaining mine & hope she goes to a good home when I can't ride her any longer due to age & health.I wouldn't want her sitting in a shed with others doing nothing! There must be a lot of people out there that just collect for the "hell of it",depriving others of giving the bikes another chance of seeing the light of day ? I think the Vermont thing is just a case of "The Man That Dies With The Most Toys Wins"

Cheers,
Roger.

Re: Suzuki gt collection for sale in vermont!
I wouldn't be too rough on the owner of those, Roger, without knowing more. There are quite a few people who are collectors/hoarders/scroungers, while their intentions are good, the execution doesn't always seem to follow logic. Some collect because they can't help it. Others are like the crazy lady who rescues 80 cats. Yes, she saved them from being put down, but is the home they end up with the best for them?
I think Pearljam's estimate of $10K is an accurate value. Early in the video, they mention there are 73 bikes in total. So that works out to $137 USD each. Seeing how they are stored, I'd be surprised if the owner can find 10 titles, and there are a quite a few smaller GTs in the lot, so that isn't 10 Buffalo titles.
Before turning a wrench, there is transportation, and a place to store them. A large outlay of money (and work), before any meaningful return.
Without a better video, and a close, personal look to see if there is a bike which has potential, it unfortunately is a collection of rusted metal. Time has not been kind, as is typical in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont.

I called him. No answer.. left message.
I think he is in St.Jonshbury given the digits in the exchange (unless cell #)
1.5 -2 hrs from me.
Your right. A lot of those bike have already been touch be others, missing parts, pitted connecting rods from moisture, rusty tanks so on so on.
And I bet he thinks each is worth $5->$25K...
Looking to retire on some tropical island
Maybe one is nice... Maybe he will be fair on price

Re: Suzuki gt collection for sale in vermont!
I think the lot of it is near Sheffield -- Lake Willoughby.
Lived around Burlington for 25 years. Worked field service for a few of those years - many trips up in the NEK, as far a Colebrook, NH.
The owner and the seller are two different people. Don't know either, but the seller probably realizes he isn't getting top dollar on every bike, all at once.

Lots of junk mixed in. You could spend a life time parting them out Purchasing Evapo-rust in 55 gallon drums. Or maybe put a tank in the ground like gas stations

Re: Suzuki gt collection for sale in vermont!
Half of those bikes don't have descent seats or seats at all. The ones that do, the gas tanks are mashed to hell. Who knows how much rust in the several good tanks ? 90% of them have rusty fork ears. I'd be willing to bet, 75% of them don't have crank seals worth a damn. You'd be lucky if there is 5 to 10 descent runners in that group as is. Regardless, of being stored in doors. There's probably very few nice chrome pieces. You can store a bike in doors. But, you still have to touch it up once in a while or everything goes to crap. You could always combine all 73 bikes and make 5 descent ones.
