Help - identify this transmission part that isn't there

I'm in the process of rebuilding a T500 engine from a 'barn find' bike which had been imaginatively put together by a previous owner...
On the right hand side is a bearing retainer (the c-shaped piece held by a screw at each end) which, er, retains the roller bearing on the end of the drive shaft.
See first pic.
Now, I was sure that there should be a cover or blanking plate under the retainer - and there is a picture in the workshop manual which shows such a cover in place, see second pic.

The mystery is that I cannot identify this part in the parts books that I have, and so can't order a replacement

Can anyone i.d. this part for me?

That manual picture looks like there is something. I have only split cases on T500 few times but don't recall that cap. It I don't think once that high up in case it matters... If it did it would be a seal not just a cap... wouldn't it?

I have a spare engine in storage I believe is original if no on4 else chimes in. I could pull the cover if you are torn on this or know one else replies definitively. I don't see it in parts either. He a pic I found when google "T500 Engine" It has no cap I can see

After looking at those pictures I have an idea - but I don't like it...
Below is a closer view of my engine.
I am thinking that the bearing bush (item 22) is there, but it is the wrong way round, with the lip on the inside rather than the outside - and I didn't notice...
if so, then it's an easy fix, but , because I have to split the cases again.

Still doesn't explain the 'missing' seal - maybe they were only on the early models or something?

Any more ideas or insights welcome!

Are those two holes tapped on your motor? I can't tell from your picture. Pretty sure my '75 motor has the plate and two screw.

yes i think it is backwards too. Stick out too far and oil groves should be inside case not under retainer.

I don't recall any cap or seal on the twins (T500/T350/GT250/T305).

I split the cases and, yes, the bearing bush was fitted backwards. Credits to Skaal-tel and Vintageman. Duhhh to me.

The seal (?) over the bearing shown in the Haynes manual is still a mystery though.
The bearing bush has a dowel to locate it in the case, so it cant move, so the bearing retainer (the c-shaped one) appears redundant?
I can't see anything like it in either the early T500 or later GT500 parts books, so who knows...
