front footrest

Post by Admin »

Im trying to find some footrest rubber that will actually fit my 70' T500. SPG 43612-03001 seems to have replaced the original rubber, but as you can see from the photo they dont look at all alike. It fits on the stem alright but the open end looks cheesy to me. Does anyone know of a source for the originals? (I did see Paul Miller's 78$ footrests.)

Hi Tecdiver70,

That is a great paint job and a pretty neat bike overall. I admire your spraying skills that looks just as good as my paint and you have the satisfaction of doing it yourself.

My bike is based on a T500M so a lot of the parts are not T500R standard but I am not bothering to chase down R parts to convert it more convicingly. Although I will grab a Grab Rail if one comes my way.

Hi Zunspec,

I have to let you know that it was the pictures of your bike that sealed the fate of mine. Truly a concourse job. Finding the paint was a bit of a task. But after spending the better part of a morning at the local paint shop we found the color. It might not be the "exact" color, but it is so close you can't tell. Other than the new technology makes the paint nicer to look at. When they gave me the price on what I would need.. yikes!! I had to think on it for a couple of days, but after looking at yours I thought there really is no question on what to do. I am very happy I did. So I have to thank you for posting your pictures. As for the grab rail, I’ll keep my eyes open. If I come across one I’ll let you know. Thank again.

Hi Tecdiver70,

You have done a great job with your bike. Glad I tipped the balance to get you off your butt and get it all together    .

You should post the details of the paint you used if you have them. I wanted as near to factory colour as possible. The only supplier who offered this were expensive but I did not have a reference Candy Lavender to select from the painters usual source of paint (i.e. much less costly).

Roll on an early spring so we can enjoy riding them (damn chilly here in the UK at moment, relatively speaking for those in in Alaska  )

Cheers Zunspec

Part 1
All right here’s the run down on the paint. The main 2 colors are from a company called HOUSE OF KOLOR. The Silver is Part #BC02.Q01, and the Magenta Part #KBC16.Q01. I used Part # RU310Q fast reducer. The White was what they called a mixing white. It was as pure white as possible. Not sure if that was factory or not, did not have anything to go by, just what I could match by sanding off the black. Also the white was just a standard base coat paint and was not from House Of Kolor. I also used Part # 394893 fast reducer for the white and a little added to the clear. And the Clear was a Standard clear coat. The clear used was from U-Tech, C320 2K clear Part # 391539. And the Activator for the clear is U2K Part # 391535. But you should be able to use any clear system that is available.

Part 2
Now on to how I sprayed the parts. I started from scratch by striping the old paint off. I had to be done. The Primer should be gray as your next layers will be silver. Mixing 2 parts paint to one part reducer, I applied 2 good coats of the Orion Silver. About 5 minutes between coats at 72 degrees F. Then mixing the Magenta, same ratio, I applied 3 nice even coats. This is where candy colors get tricky. The more layers of the color coat you add the darker the finished paint will be. I stopped a 3 because it was just a little darker than the piece I had to match against. The clear coats will bring it back just a bit. But don’t count on a lot of change. After about 2 hours I was able to tape off the places that were to get the white. Again same ratio on the white, I sprayed 3 nice coats down. I gave the white about 20 minutes before pulling the tape and the paper off. I a couple of places I found the white worked its way under the tape. Using 600 grit I sanded it nice and easily away. I did get some over spray on the inside where the tank sits into the mounts on the frame. I didn’t worry about it though.

Part 3
Now comes the clear. It is mixed at 4 parts clear coat, 1 part Activator, and then I added 1 part reducer to it. For those of us with out a paint booth, the little bit of reducer will help it lay smoother. I applied 2 heavy coats over every thing. Making sure I didn’t have any “dryâ€

Ok last bit on the paint. House Of Kolor will only sell there paint in Quarts or more. So like me you will have lots left over. I used a cup of Silver and a cup of Megenta for all 3 parts. And the Magenta was $70 usd. And the Silver was $45 usd. All together I had over $200 usd in the paints, reducers and activator. I had this all down in the main forum, so sorry for the double postings but I thought it should realy be in here.

Hey Tecdiver,
Lovely work. Congrats on the effort and outcome.
I think the Candy Lavender is the best looking of all the T500 colours. My wife , in contrast , refers to it as "He's painting his bike pink" :? I've told her that it's a indicator of how secure we are in our masculinity to contemplate restoring and riding a bike of this colour  To me the colour screams 70's.

Hi Mike,

I had to laugh after reading your post. My wife also referred to the color as "pink". I had to explain that it was "Lavender". Of course she had to laugh about that. But I do agree it is a color of the 70's. And now looking at the bike finished, what a great decade for color.

Hey Tecdiver,

Do you have a spray booth? Or did you build one up out of plastic sheet? One of my problem with home spraying is keep dust out of the paint!

Seems a shame for all that extra HOK magenta to go to waste. I don't suppose you'd be willing to paint bodywork for your fellow board members? If not you could always paint a body set for Ebay. I've seen resprayed sets of T500 bodywork go for $600-700 on Ebay recently....
