Right side not firing....

Post by Pookie »

My right side is firing intermittently; in fact it’s not firing more often than firing.
This is what has been done so far. This bike sat for years and has been drained everything and replenished. New battery.
1. Cleaned and rebuilt carbs.
2. Replaced condensers.
3. Replaced coils.
4. Set timing with that strobie light thingy.
5. Replaced spark plugs.
Things that I noticed occurring:
The left side smokes a bit when you first kick it but that’s it. Sounds really good. The bike starts on like the first or second kick, which it never did before.
On the right side, there is air coming out the pipe but nothing else, I took out the spark plug and it is wet (smells like gas/oil). One thing I did notice is that between my cylinder head and cylinder there seemed to be a small amount of gas oil mix (?) I can’t say for sure if it came out the head or not but thought I would offer this up.
The coils have been crossed over to see if it was electrical and the right side still would not fire off. Left side fires up great!
So, do I need to go back to carbs? Or timing? Or could a bad gasket cause this?

I'm new to this mechanical stuff so please act like your talking to a 10yr old. I have know idea how to do a compression test but I can say that if you put your hand over the ends of booth pipes, both blow your hand off. (off the pipe, I still have both hands :))

Pookie,
First thing I would do is switch those plugs around and then see if the problem is reversed. ie; right side firing well and left not. I put in 2 new plugs in my restored Honda last year and had that same trouble. FINALLY figured it was a bad plug even though new.
Do you have a service manual? You will need that. You did not mention the contact points being set or replaced. They open and close to send spark to the plugs. Must be in good shape and set correctly. Next, the wire from the coil to that cylinder plug. Take the plug out and keeping it attached to the cap. does it spark when you turn it over? Could be a bad wire or just the cap that goes on the plug.
Hopefully others will offer some help. Good luck, Doug

PS: Carbs will have nothing to do with the spark. gas/oil on the motor is likely one of the lines leaking on top of the engine that feed the cylinders. Where they enter the cyclinders or more than likely a splice in the line coming from the oil tank to the pump.

thanks Doug, sorry I'm late...just got back from a road trip to Utah.

So I reversed plugs and the left is still not firing. Put new points on and set. But I definitely will check those again.

New cap and new plugs, I think the timing should be recheck though...

It's summer man...I should be riding!!

I understand that T500s will drop the right cylinder when the battery is weak. Have you tried charging the battery?

In your first post, you said the RIGHT was not firing and here you say the left after the plugs were reversed. Was that just a mistake? If not, it's the plug. Regards, Doug
